Night Rises album review

There’s something truly dreamy about indie pop duo PAINTonPAINT’s debut LP Night Rises.

Perhaps it’s the reverb-laden vocals, or the harmonic interplay between various instruments. Regardless, this is an album which sees the dynamic pair, Hannah Beasley and Chris Endry, share songs that are rich and which deftly explore their experiences and musings.

If I’m honest, I hadn’t really heard that much of PAINTonPAINT prior to Night Rises’ release. Hailing from our great nation’s capital, they definitely have a gift for layering instruments atop one another without overcrowding a song. I heard the album’s opener ‘Go On’ through Facebook late one night in Summer, and immediately felt the urge to buy the album and listen to all of their prior work – and it’s worth mentioning that this isn’t something I often do. It is peaceful, yet awakening.

Produced by Dax Liniere of Puzzle Factory Studios, the album is filled with warmth and can be listened to just about anywhere. ‘Wine Dark Sea’ is quietly beautiful, with stunning vocal tones. Its crescendo happens slowly, with a careful build, before it takes off effortlessly. Beasley’s voice is particularly notable; it is strong and compelling in each of the tracks she sings.

In ‘High Life’, Endry comes to the fore. This song is a powerful reminder of how great a song can be when it is sung well, without overcomplicating the composition. It is bare-boned, and thought-provoking.

With all the great musicians emerging out of Australia in the last couple of years, it can be easy to dismiss our small home in Canberra as being a bit boring. Night Rises is here to show you that this isn’t the case.
